It’s Friday… The Story Behind the Song

by Andrea Noles

It all started three years ago on a normal Friday. We quietly snuck in Weston’s room, turned on his lamp, and Daniel brilliantly coined the “It’s Friday” song. Right there, on the spot, no practice, no planning, just in-the-moment fun!

He quietly sang…

“It’s Friday, It’s Friday!
Thank the good Lord
we made it through another week
cause It’s Friday!”

Weston rolled over, smiled at our silly attempt to wake him up, and popped out of bed.

I wish there was more to it really.
Or maybe I don’t.
Maybe the simple act of playing a song for a child was enough.
Maybe God knew how much this creative act would grow and decided to keep its beginnings humble.

Maybe this little story is a lot like The Parable of the Mustard Seed.
Because a simple story has the power to change the course of someone’s day, a week, or a lifetime.

30 And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.” Mark 4:30-32

Nearly every Friday that followed, the song continued.
We added lyrics, sometimes silly, sometimes serious.
But we just kept doing it.

We never knew our commitment to creating and cultivating a song was for anyone else.
But God did.
Because God loves FAMILY.
And FAMILY was HIS idea from the beginning.
God knows what “good” looks like.
He calls it out and makes “good” grow.
Just like He did in the beginning.

In the beginning God made the light and the dry land, and the waters, and the seeds, and the trees, the living creatures, the beasts of the earth, and the livestock, and every creeping thing that creeps.

He called them all good!

He made a garden and gardener.
But something suddenly wasn’t good.
“Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
Genesis 2:18

Family.

God knew this world needed us.
He needed family to multiply and make more beautiful people.
He needed seed scatterers.
He needed musicians.
He needed ALL of us to tell His story.

So here we are, on the other side of Genesis.
Creating together.
Working together.
Remembering the good things and making the good things grow.

We are Telling the World, “It’s Friday,” but what we really mean is…

“We are tired and weak and we need a break.”
“We need time together to grow and laugh and love.”
“WE NEED REST.”

Fridays are for family.
They mean take-out-meals and food trucks.
Neighborhood parties and watching movies.
They mean late night stories and downloading new songs on Itunes!

Whatever Fridays mean to you, just keep celebrating the simple.
Maybe a small seed you’ve planted will grow into something bigger than you could ever imagine.

Remember the good and the good will grow.

  1. Thanks so much for sharing the background tale. I, for one, cannot say the phrase "It's Friday" without singing it and bobbing my head. But it is so much more.It is a reminder of all the simple but hugely important things of which you wrote. And each week I am grateful for the smile and message Weston brings us each week. It's a treasured family tradition.
